Despair crawled along the ruins of his bed, watching with interest. “But it was the right answer all along. So when I need food, I’ll take it. When helping people means getting hurt, I won’t. I’ll look after myself, I promise. You’ve convinced me.”

He waited for her to tell him he was wrong and overrule everything he’d said, but she didn’t do anything. He watched the orange light of dusk turn dark. He almost fell asleep. When he started to wonder if Dr. Damzle had left the room, he looked up.

He found her in tears. Her lips quivered as her makeup ran. How could she handle being angry all the time? He’d never understand.

“You can go,” She finally said.

Jolted, he stood. “No kidding?”

She nodded. “I’ll arrange the release with the hospital. The nurses will get you clothes. You have to understand, I was only trying to—” She pressed a hand to her temple. “I’m sorry but I have to leave.” She collected her notepad and bag and headed for the door.

“Wait.”

She stopped, peering at him.

“What changed your mind?”

She sniffed, turning back around, and left without answering.
